EXPLORE

This is from the Explore website:

“explore is a philanthropic community whose mission is to champion the selfless acts of others, to create a portal into the soul of humanity and to inspire lifelong learning. Our dream is to create a destination of trust.”
- Founder, Charles Annenberg Weingarten
I have to say... it was a unique and rare thing in my editing experiences to think that the results of my work might possibly, maybe, somehow help make a real world difference to somebody.

Even if it’s a small thing, even if it’s moving one person to help another person when he or she might have otherwise remained on the sidelines... I think that’s a good thing.

EXPLORE: WELL OF MEMORIES

DOCUMENTARY
SHORT SUBJECT
STREAMING
This short piece wasn’t shot for the India music documentary, India's Song, though because of the nature of the content, it was cut and made a part of that doc for a long while. Happily, when it didn’t make the cut, it was allowed a stand-alone spot in Explore’s film roster - which ultimately was a better place for it anyway.

This short is a re-edit of a piece on the featured calligraphy master. If you watch the original after watching my version, you’ll see that the same material can yield rather different results in different editors' hands...

TELEVISION

UNDER THE KNIFE ABROAD

DOCUMENTARY

TELEVISION
A documentary for Vanguard, the Peabody-winning documentary news show that was on Current (aka CurrentTV, or Current.com... aka the "left-wing" news network).*** A great group of filmmakers at Current... and I learned something about alternative health care options to boot.

*** Of course, Current TV went out of business, and then Al Jazeera America - which had bought Current - closed up shop. I finally snagged a copy of the show, just for your viewing pleasure...

SOLITARY (season 1)

REALITY TV
My first adventure in the world of competitive “reality” shows. It wasn’t quite as grueling as the show itself...

GRACE ZABRISKIE - INTERVIEW WITH AN ARTIST (EXCERPT)

PROMO
My Brothel director asked me to cut together a few pieces for the DVD release of the film, and I found myself very pleasantly surprised with the little documentary that we made - showcasing a lesser-known side of the actor GRACE ZABRISKIE...

INSIDE A BEAUTIFUL MIND

DOCUMENTARY
EPK/PROMO

This piece was created to help the film win Academy Awards votes with the “voting crowd". And it seems to have worked.

I guess we in editorial (props to my multi-talented friend Ray Greene for his additional editing) did our job...

JOHNNY GILL - RUB YOU THE RIGHT WAY (EXCERPT)

MUSIC VIDEO

One of my first editing jobs out of film school was working for Motown, and the very first video I was asked to edit was for Johnny Gill’s “Rub You the Right Way”...

When MTV became unhappy with the video that had been provided them (I think it was a big name like Julian Temple who directed it) I was asked to make, essentially, video wallpaper for dance clubs - something editorially flashy and not meant to be watched. And yet, it was resubmitted to MTV and made it to number one on MTV’s Top Ten for a few weeks. I like to think that it was how cool “my” video was that was behind its success, and not how hot Johnny Gill was at the time. No really.
